Composition of Journal’s Editorial Board
The Children’s First: Journal on Children’s Lives has an independent Editorial Board chaired by Dr. Venita Kaul, Former Professor, Ambedkar University. The composition of the Editorial Board is given below:
Dr. Venita Kaul, Chief Editor
Dr Venita Kaul is Professor Emerita (Education) Ambedkar University Delhi from where she retired in 2016 as Director of School of Education Studies and Founder Director of Center for Early Childhood Education and Development (CECED). Prior to this Prof Kaul was a Senior Education Specialist in The World Bank for over ten years. She was earlier in NCERT for over twenty years from where she took early retirement from the position of Professor and Head of Department of Preschool and Elementary Education.
Professor Srikrishna Deva Rao, Editor
Professor Srikrishna Deva Rao is the Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Law at National Law University, Delhi. He has been instrumental in institutionalising legal aid and legal empowerment in India. He is an institutional builder and has made significant contributions to the growth and expansion of multiple nascent institutions in India. He has previously been the Vice-Chancellor of National Law University Odisha (2014 - 2020), Registrar of National Law University Delhi (2010 - 2014), Founding Director of School of Law, IGNOU (2007 - 2010), and Dean of the Gujarat National Law University (2004 - 2007).
Dr. Vandana Prasad, Editor
Dr. Vandana Prasad (MBBS, MRCP-Ped, MPH) is a community paediatrician and public health professional who has been engaged with the social sector for over two decades. She is Founder Secretary, National Convenor, and Technical Advisor for Public Health Resource Network (PHRN). She is also Joint Convenor of People’s Health Movement-India (Jan Swasthya Abhiyan) and a member of the Steering Committee of the Right to Food Campaign, She has served the Government of India as Member (Child Health), National Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
Mr. Mahesh Menon, Editor
Mahesh Menon is an Assistant Professor of Law at Sai University and Faculty at Daksha Fellowship. He specialises in Human Rights Law. He has also served as Coordinator, Centre for Child Rights (in partnership with UNICEF) National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata. He has published several books including one on gender and children’s issues. He has also served as Member of, Expert Committee Appointed by the High Court of Calcutta to devise guidelines for combating sexual harassment of children in educational institutions.
Ms. Yamini Aiyar, Editor
Ms. Yamini Aiyar is the President and Chief Executive of the Centre for Policy Research (CPR). She was previously a senior research fellow and founder of the Accountability Initiative (AI) at the centre. Her research interests span the fields of public finance, social policy, state capacity, federalism, governance and the study of contemporary politics in India. Her recent policy commitments include: Commissioner and Chair governance working group, Lancet Commission on Reimagining India’s Health System; Member State Advisory Council, Government of Punjab, Member Technical Advisory Group, National Data and Analytics Platform, Niti Aayog.
Professor Disha Nawani, Editor
Professor Disha Nawani is currently a Professor at School of Education, Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Her research interests lie within the discipline of sociology of education, curricular, pedagogic and assessment-related issues, teaching-learning resources, teacher education, analysis of educational policies and programmes etc. She has been a member of the Drafting Committee of India Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (2020) and Development of Handbook of Textual material, NCERT (2020). She is the Managing Editor at Contemporary Education Dialogue, SAGE. She has also been an Expert Advisor on a seven state comparative study on Activity Based Learning funded by UNICEF and conducted by Education Initiatives, Bengaluru (April 2012-15).
Dr Devjani Ray, Editor
Dr. Devjani Ray is an Associate Professor of English at Miranda House, University of Delhi. After finishing her undergraduate studies at Presidency College Kolkata, Devjani pursued her higher education at universities in Delhi. For her doctoral dissertation she worked on Bengali Children's Periodicals (1885-1920). During the course of her doctoral studies, she was awarded the Charles Wallace Trust grant for research in the UK (2015). Recently she was invited to deliver a talk on Translation and Bengali Children's Literature at an international webinar on nuances of translation in India. Her most recent work has been recognised by Sahapedia, an online repository of arts, cultures and heritage of India and the publication of the same is in process. Dr Devjani regularly writes opinion pieces on various aspects of higher education which have appeared in leading news portals like The Wire, ORF Online and Delhi Post. Her areas of interest include children's literature, nationalism and print culture in India.
Dr. Asmaa Al Fadala, Editor
Dr. Asmaa Alfadala is the Director of Research and Content Development at the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE). She is also a visiting fellow at Cambridge University. She has over twenty years of expertise in K-12 education, higher education, and policy development, and has served as a government policy writer, professor, author of books on leadership reform, and board member on educational organizations. Dr. Alfadala holds a Ph.D. and an M.Phil in Educational Leadership and Policy from Cambridge University. She has worked as a program committee member, teacher, school leader, and fellow in various institutes in Qatar. She is a widely recognized author in the field of educational policy and leadership. Dr. Alfadala's research interests include educational leadership, entrepreneurship education, teacher professional development, educational transformation and innovation, and the SDGs.
Mr. Ronald Abraham, Editor
Ronald has significant experience in education and nutrition research, practical and rigorous research methodologies, and organisational development. Currently, Ronald is a Co-founder of Jan Suraaj Vichaar Manch, a new sociopolitical initiative in Bihar.
Previously, Ronald was Co-Founder of IDinsight, an applied research and data organisation. He helped build the organisation's India presence for over a decade (2012 to 2022). Ronald was instrumental in growing the organisation's footprint in India, creating a values-based and impact-driven culture, and developing and delivering rigorous and impactful research projects.
Prior to that, Ronald worked with the Pratham national team on the Annual Status of Education Report (2006 and 2007). He was also Pratham's co-lead for a statewide learning program with the Government of Punjab, covering 13,000 government primary schools.
Prior to working at Pratham, Ronald was at the Centre for Policy Alternatives in New Delhi, where his research topics included poverty measurement and centre-state public finance.
Ronald holds a B.A. (Hons.) in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and an M.P.A. in International Development (MPA/ID) from Harvard Kennedy School (HKS). Ronald received the Joint Japan / World Bank Graduate Scholarship to attend HKS.
Dr. Kamayani Kumar, Editor
Dr. Kamayani Kumar is currently an Assistant Professor, Department of English, Aryabhatta College, University of Delhi. Her PhD from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi was in the domain of Childhood studies – Representation of Child, Body and nation in Partition Literature. Her area of interests includes childhood trauma, memory studies, Partition studies. A coedited volume Childhood Traumas: Narratives and Representations, has been recently published by Routledge. Her forthcoming book focuses on how artists have attempted to represent Partition and its continuing impact through paintings, video art, modes of representation.
Ms. Garima Sharma, Associate-Editor
Ms. Garima Sharma is currently working as an Associate Researcher at HAQ: Centre for Child Rights. She has previously worked with the Delhi Commission For Protection Of Child Rights, as a Consultant where she led a team of 45+ professionals including Editors, Advisors, Peer Reviewers, Designers, and Copyeditors, overseeing the successful management of Children First Journal on Children's Lives. She has also worked with the World Bank as a Research Innovation Fellow at South Asia Gender Innovation Lab. She has experience working as a researcher and Educator for various organisations. Her Research interest areas are Education, Child Protection, Transition and Youth Studies.
Roles and Responsibilities of the Editorial Board:
- Frame, and amend, if needed, the guidelines for submissions;
- Screen the submitted manuscripts and reject the submissions in case of repetition of content with recent publications, non-compliance with ethical standards, poor research quality, or any other reason it deems cogent;
- Advise the changes/edits to the authors, and/or approve them for final publication;
- Decide on re-publishing of certain submissions in cases where they have been published elsewhere in the past on a case to case basis;
- Perform advanced checks on plagiarism ensuring that multiple submissions of the same article to other journals are published only after discussion within the Board;
- Review of conflict of interests (if any) before beginning the process of in-depth review; g. In consultation with the Advisory Panel, determine the theme of the next publication;
- Meet, preferably in person, at least once per cycle of publication;
- The Chief Editor to attend the meetings of the Advisory Panel along with Editors as may deem fit;
- Any other function that is incidental to their aforementioned responsibilities.
